Golf Chipping Tips for Any Skill Level

Since many shots tend to be given up around the green, we’re going to talk about some golf chipping tips that can help you improve your short game and lower your score. Knowing how to chip can really give you that confidence you may need to get the ball up and down around the green. Here are some guidelines that I always keep in my mind which have really helped my game.

  1. If you have a lot of green to work with, chip with lower-lofted clubs. The more green you have, the lower the loft required to execute the appropriate shot. Use a narrow stance for this shot and put your weight slightly forward. Make yourself keep your head down and very still for the entirety of the shot in order to hit the ball cleanly. This shot requires some feel and a little wrist action, but you don’t want to take a big backswing. Keep it short and sweet, and keep your follow-through low.
  2. If you don’t have a lot of distance between yourself and the pin then you may want to use a club with more loft. I prefer the 60 degree wedge typically. This shot requires a lot of feel, and the length of the backswing depends on how much green you have and how much loft you need on the shot. Don’t use a lot of legs or turn in your torso for this one; you want to use a soft arm swing and keep the clubface pointing towards the sky.
  3. If you need a lot of loft quickly, try using an open stance with the club face pointing at the target. Swing along the line of your feet instead of towards the target, but keep the clubface open at all times through the shot.
  4. The next time you find yourself in a green-side bunker and full of panic, well just relax and know that this shot is easier than we make it a lot of times. Select a wedge with a lot of loft (like a 60 degree) and open your stance as much as you can. Like in the flop shot we just talked about, you can swing along the line of your feet (very open) while keeping your club face square with the target. Try to hit about four to six inches behind the ball, use a little bit of wrist action and just let the club do the work. It’s easy to quit on this shot and not accelerate through the ball, so make sure you follow through pretty high.
