Why Is Golf Swing Tempo So Critical to Your Success?

Do you know the secret to hitting the ball flush so that you can rely on consistency in your golf game? That’s right…the golf swing tempo is one of the most important components of the swing. If you watch any of the PGA Tour pros swing the club then you can see exactly what I’m talking about. Every swing is different, but they all have that smooth, fluid tempo that gives them maximum accuracy and consistency.

When thinking about the golf swing tempo, it’s easiest to remember that most pros use the 3:1 ratio strategy. That is, your backswing should be about 3 times as long (measured in time) as your downswing. There is no standard length of time for your swing, but if your downswing lasts about a third of the time as your backswing, and the transition at the top is smooth, then your swing tempo will be on target. Having a smooth swing tempo can really propel your game and allow you to increase distance and accuracy.

It’s a common misconception that you have to swing as fast and hard as your body will allow in order to hit the ball far. This couldn’t be further from the truth. In order to maximize distance you need to have solid clubface-to-ball contact with a solid turn through the ball. Having a smooth, easy tempo can really help you achieve this. In addition to increasing distance you can definitely increase accuracy by having a smooth transition from backswing to downswing because your chances of hitting the ball on the sweet spot are greatly improved.
